Before humans developed advanced linguistic skills, we relied on gesture, body posture, facial expressions and eye movement to communicate with one another. Our bodies speak for themselves. Without a sound or word, our feelings, actions, and at times, thoughts can be perceived through our bodies.
Soma: The Living Body concentrates on artwork that is representational of and depicts the living body. It approaches figurative works that capture the vitality, anguish, or tranquility of the human form. From the reclining nude, sitting thinker, to the dancer in contraction, the formal elements of art are essential to communicating the emotions and actions in our daily lives.
In exploring the figurative artwork and the human body, artists should feel free to use body posture, gesture, and any medium to express their artistic voice. The exhibition asks artists to use any medium to depict the living human form and our body language.
Additionally, artists are encouraged to experiment with how our bodies can speak for themselves and can indicate pain, joy, or fear. The use of traditional and non-traditional materials and techniques that capture the artist’s global and cultural voice are welcomed. In Greek, “soma,” refers to the body, dead or living; this exhibition borrows this Greek word and articulates the focus on the living body.
