This call for entry is to “Capture the Moment” and then tell us the story behind it. The story can range from how you came about capturing the image you did to your interpretation of the moment you captured. The images we seek are ones that really engage the viewer and makes them want to know what is going on in the image. (ex. What the thoughts may be in the subjects mind, how you captured such an odd image, why you thought to capture this moment, what does this moment mean to you)

These two masters enriched the history of photography by being some of the first to experiment with new technologies in a relatively new art medium. They were also traditionalists and truly embraced manual and old photography processes. The hundred and fifty photographers from Steichen’s world is millions today, and finding “as perfect a kind of photograph as was ever made” is no longer as simple. Digital cameras and editing software have transformed the medium and opened up whole new worlds for the 21st century photographer. We have dozens of “aps” that help us tweak a digital image to “perfection” in minutes. A vast repertoire of image resources we look to for inspiration and meaning still brings us to the same point of reflection as photographers of the early 20th century: what is the art of photography?

Black and white photography, a genre that many would claim made them fall in love with image-making in the first place, has remained completely relevant and contemporary despite it’s ancient roots. It is timeless, sometimes soft, sometimes dramatic and brings new perspective to images and image making. Whether you are a darkroom purist or a Photoshop craftperson, show us your love for hue-less images. We want to see YOUR best black and white or alternative process images for an exhibit that will pay tribute to the origins of photography and praise it’s development.

Juror: Rafal Maleszyk

Growing up in southern Poland, Maleszyk spent his childhood and early years in post-communist Poland. He first started exploring photography using a 35mm Kiev on his fourteenth birthday, and learnt how to develop black and white prints in the dark room set up by his father in the family kitchen.

Maleszyk’s photography is rooted in his interest in natural landscapes. For him, photography is the ultimate artistic form that captures one’s encounter or oneness with nature. His style focuses on simplifying and expressing with intimacy the perspectives in nature. His training in fine art has helped him with the craft of composition and experimentation.

In 2009, he moved to the Oahu island of Hawaii, where he now works as a professional fine art black and white landscape photographer, specializing in large format prints series using a digital medium format Hasselblad camera. To date, his photographic portfolio covers landscapes from many countries including Poland, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador.

Maleszyk has received numerous awards for his work and we are very happy to have him juror our first black and white photography exhibition at the Darkroom Gallery.

Submissions received by December 31, 2011 11:59pm EST will be considered for the $1,000 Early Entry Award in addition to the Grand Prize and Category Awards.

Year in Review is an international open call for Painting, Sculpture & Installation, Photography, Design & Illustration, Motion & Sound, and more, with a mission to present a range of technique, style and narrative that captures the best emerging artists of the year. Our goal is simple – to find amazing talents and expose them to the world in the most potent way possible.

Jurors:
Executive directors, editors and curators have been selected from esteemed publications and institutions ranging from The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and New York Photo Festival to ArtStars*, Printed Matter Inc. and Independent Curators International to act as the Jury Panel for Year in Review.

Whether your image is portrait, landscape, abstract, black & white or any other photographic subject you can enter as long as you live in the UK.

We will print the winning entry on high quality satin or glossy Canson 270gsm photo paper.

Competition closes end of December. This is a monthly open competition for UK residents so if you do not win this month, enter a new photo in January!

The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers.
Submit up to 15 images from one project. If you are selected for the FotoEvidence Book Award you will be asked to submit 100-120 photographs on the same topic.

Juror: Elizabeth Opalenik

Elizabeth’s work has been featured in Zoom, Camera Arts, Black and White Magazine, Silvershotz, Photo District News, Collectors Photography and Progresso Fotografico, among others. Commercial clients including Life Magazine, Gossard Lingerie, Coty Perfume, Michael Good Design, Sea Air Holidays and ongoing campaigns for The Ladies Professional Golf Association and Nancy Lopez Golf. She is exhibited, collected and published internationally and recently published her first monograph “Poetic Grace: Elizabeth Opalenik Photographs 1979-2007″.

She uses the Mordançage darkroom process, hand painting, and contemporary digital imaging in mix, utilizing their combined boundless creative possibilities. Between imagination and dreams, she believes all great photographs are an extension of the photographer – in essence, self-portraits. Her darkroom skills, photo therapeutic approach, and the inspiration from her work, make her a popular facilitator. She conducts photography workshops internationally, in partnership with the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, the Maine Media Workshops, the British Guild of Portrait Photographers, National Geographic Expeditions, The Rencontres d’Arles, and others.

We offer free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibition, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs.

As Mary Ellen wrote in her statement after jurying the first edition of this award, we will like to see, in a time when we’re inundated with imagery and media that is commercially-driven, images representing purity in photography that is inspiring and hopeful.

Who can participate: Professional and non professional women photographers from all countries. On this occasion there will be only one section: pro and non-pro will be juried together. Only Single images will be accepted; no portfolios in this edition.

Jurors: Amber Terranova and Dina Bova.

Amber Terranova is the photo editor for Photo District News. She worked previously for New York magazine and Outside. She holds a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts, Manhattan. Amber has assisted with programming at Center, a Santa Fe-based non-profit organization that supports photographers. Her taste in photography tends toward emerging and established artists with strong personal projects, surprising content and evidence of political or social engagement. She’s most drawn to introspective, provocative work.

Dina Bova was born in Moscow and currently lives in Israel. Her images have been awarded in Px3, Hasselbald Masters, Sony Awards, 1st edition of the JMCA, Nikon, PDN’s World in Focus, and have won 21 Gold medals in international photo-contests under FIAP/PSA patronage in USA, Austria, France, England, Croatia, Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel. Her art is a world of allegories, metaphors and multifaceted associations. She thinks that it’s not important how an artist creates his work. It can be created with any tool and any medium, but it should speak for itself and convey a very special mood. It should need no explanation, no elaboration and no apologies. It can be very aesthetic or the opposite of it. For Dina, the most important thing is freeing the imagination.

Award: The Julia Margaret Cameron Award will be given to 12 women photographers which will be invited to exhibit (and sell) their work in a very selective collective exhibition in Paris during 2013, honoring one hundredth year of the birth of Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos and famous war photojournalist. WPGA will take care of the framing and matting, as well as all gallery expenses. Exhibitors will receive 40% of the sales, 20% will be reserved for the gallery/organizers, and 40% will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the awardees.A catalog will be printed, and all 12 awardees will receive one free copy.

All selected images will be reproduced in a full colour catalogue which all entrants receive. The Exhibition will open in the City of London in July 2012 and will tour the UK for a nearly a year. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to sell copies of their prints

For the RPS category you can submit up to 4 prints on any subject matter. If a print is submitted for the Allen and Overy Award this must relate to the theme of Change. A text box is provided on the entry form for a brief explanation of how your print relates to the theme.

This year’s Photo of the Year contest and awards even celebrate a decade of showcasing amateur photography, including 100+ “best of” winners and 1,000+ participants, and raising nearly $100,000. The categories for 2011 are Top 100, Faces, Portland, Youth, and Professional.

The twelve selected winners will not only have their work shown for a full month in thousands of Kiwi homes but also receive 10 calendars to share around and a stack of wonderful prizes

All prints will be on 13″x19″ premium luster paper. The prints will be pinned up with small chrome pins, no frames for this show. Again, it is more of a salon style show, it should be a fun show.

No theme. No juror. Everything is accepted. Cut off is at 100 photos.

And the 2011 competiton, energised by E.ON, will be bigger and better than ever before, offering a total £700 for the overall “winner of winners”.

Entries submitted to Nikon are then judged by an independent panel of experts who are recognized authorities in the area of photomicrography and photography. These entries are judged on the basis of originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual impact.

Photomicrographs must be taken using a light microscope, such as one of the Nikon series of compound or stereoscopic microscopes. The use of Nikon equipment is not required.

JUROR:
Krzysztof Candrowicz is a founder and the director of Lodz Art Center and Foundation of Visual Education in the city of Lodz, Poland. The foundation started the International Festival of Photography in 2001 and is now preparing the eleventh annual celebration for 2012. As a director and chief curator of this event, Krzysztof established an association of 30 European festivals of photography, called PHOTO FESTIVAL UNION. The organization is responsible for common activities of European photo events, such as annual meetings, publications, photographic exchange and common promotion.

The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

Exhibit Prints: All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed or mounted professionally. The Center recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. To encourage participation by photographers from around the world, the Center offers optional economical printing and framing services. Additional details will be provided upon request.

Acceptance Notice: Everyone who submits will receive an email notification of which images were accepted. Accepted images will be posted on the Center’s website along with instructions for the gallery presentation.

We’d love to see pictures of Land Rovers in locations stretching from rural UK, through to vehicles in a foreign urban environment – use your imagination.

Winning entries will all feature in the new 2013 calendar and each one picked will win a prize.

This is an open photography competition. The selected winning 12 photographs will be used in the 2013 Britpart calendar.

Everyone is welcome to enter the competition whether amateur or professional, except those directly involved in the organisation and judging. You can enter as many photographs as you want.

The competition closes on 6 January 2012 and the winners will be selected by our expert panel of judges and have their image displayed in the windows of our shops across the UK.

A selection of winning and highly commended photos will be featured in the Independent on Sunday at the end of January 2012.

The categories

Adults: Open to amateur and professional photographers who will be 16 or over on the closing date. £10 entry fee.

Students: Open to all students aged 16 or over undertaking full or part-time courses at a UK-based college or university. You must supply the name of your college/university as part of the registration process. If selected as a winner you will be required to provide proof of your student status otherwise you will be disqualified. £5 entry fee.

Junior: You must be aged 15 or below on the closing date of Sunday 6th January 2012. You must obtain your parent’s or guardian’s permission before entering the competition as part of the registration process. £5 entry fee.

Photographs should be in keeping with the general theme of the 4th Annual Nature’s Colors Photo Contest, including, but not limited to photos of historical locations, landscape and travel.

Working relationship.Best photograph demonstrating the relationship between a member of Trust staff and a Hawk Conservancy Trust bird of prey.
Flora and fauna. Best photograph of the wildflowers, shrubs, plants, trees, insects, mammals and wildlife around the grounds of the Trust (excludes birds of prey).
In the wild. Best photograph of a wild (non-captive/non-Trust) bird of prey taken in its natural setting.
Young Photographer. Best photograph in any category, taken by an under 16 year old.

Please note that all photographs must have been taken either on the Trust grounds or at other locations where Trust birds are displayed by Trust staff, with the exception of those entered into the ‘In the Wild’ category.

We are looking for pictures that show that special relationship between people, work, technology and place and celebrate the huge diversity of settings and places where people do their work. We want to see pictures showing people in their workplace wherever that may be at home, on the move, in the café, on the beach, and in the office…in fact anywhere where it’s possible to work.

Processing of each photo must be done on a mobile device, no desktop computer editing is permitted. You may use any photo editing application of your choosing as long as said application runs directly on your mobile phone device. All images not shot on a Mobile phone or iOS device will be disqualified. All prize winners will be required to submit raw images for verification.

Even professional artists sometimes get lost in the art-school loop, and forget that mastery is not the only content of their artwork. Those who manage to overcome this simple drive often leverage mastery and pure dedication to the light the eye sees, while also elevating the work to a level beyond, to one of enlightenment, even from the simplest of subjects. It is this, the distillation of precious insight from our tangible world, discerned first through meticulous observation, that The Observed sets out to explore, present, and document.

Manifest continues its eighth season with a project intended to feature and explore a wide variety of works made from direct observation. While the first assumption may be that pure objective realism is the expectation, Manifest is also eager to see just how artists make work, even non-traditional art, still using the process of looking, working, and looking again. We are curious just how this is done in the world today.

This show is open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts genre and media, including video, photography, etc. Photographers should note that it is a foregone conclusion that most photography is made via observation through the camera lens. Excellent photographic candidates for this exhibit will speak even more than usual to the process of observation.

With a great team of judges, this new competition will quickly earn a prominent spot on the contest map. Reflecting the reality of nature photography today digital restrictions are the most relaxed of any major contest.

Subject matter is open, and we have no categories. You must indicate for each photo entered whether it is a black-and-white photo or color; however, the judges and publisher may move it from one color to the other for judging and, if chosen, for publication in the hardcover boo

Contest Categories:

Still Life/Other
Still Life is the type of work in which an arrangement of diverse inanimate objects, including items of food, plants and artifacts is depicted. This arrangement is often apparently random and is usually within a domestic setting. A “Still Life” is an arrangement of anything that does not move or is dead. Anything still living is not a “Still Life”.

Other Photography is an entry that does not appear to fit in any other category.

Scenic
Scenic Photography is Landscapes, Cityscapes, Seascapes and Skies. Broad or wide-angle views in which the main subject is the environment. Architecture is best suited, but not limited to this category.

People
People Photography contains people or a person. Can be Portraiture, Journalism or Candid, as long as there is a person or persons presented.

Digital Art
Digital Art, contemporary art in which computer technology is used in a wide variety of ways to make distinctive works. All components of the entry must be the entrants own photography and/or artwork. No base photography is required for Digital Art. Public Domain imagery is NOT allowed.

For entries in the Digital Art (DA) category, the image MUST be your own creation but may also contain elements of which you own the rights. However, these elements should not comprise the entire image. Elements that are considered Public Domain are not allowed in whole or part in any category. For filters and elements that are supplied with software, consult that software manufacturer’s End User License Agreement (EULA).

Macro/Abstract
Macro photography refers to close-up photography. Entries should be 1:1 or larger but not required. General “Close-up” photography will suit this category. Subject matter is not limited to anything in particular. You need not specifically use your Macro feature.

Abstract photography is having only basic or essential form with little or no pictorial representation or narrative content. Generally, if it is immediately recognizable as an object – it is not always considered an abstract. Abstract in this category refers to the abstract quality of the photograph composition, not the abstract quality of the subject matter.

Black & White
Black & White Photography depicts any subject matter in a grayscale, sepia or monotone manner.

Animal
Animal Photography depicts Animals and Insects.

Theme
Rules and guidelines will be outlined within a week of the 1st of every month.

Panos
Panos can be submitted in any category, provided they fit the category content.
