Joel Meyerowitz selected the contest theme and will pick the winners from a preliminary selection by the PhoozL Photo Pros panel. Submit up to five (5) photos relating to the theme (“Seeing the Light”). The capture date does not matter (new or archived), there are no processing/editing restrictions, and the best part of all is the top prize!

The contest is open to both professional and amateur photographers from the whole world. The photos should have an authentic message and should be made under natural conditions. Animals or plants of wild origin should be presented on pictures in their natural environment. Each participant guarantee that photographed animals were not disturbed (e.g. birds during nesting) or rare plants and habitats were not destroyed.

Certain corrections of photography are allowed: levels, curves, colour balance, hue/saturation, brightness, contrast, but natural looking of the photo should remain. The correction of some technical errors is also possible: scratch or dust on the lens, etc.

Corrections/modifications affecting only one part of the picture are not allowed

And, this time, we ask you to capture the photos related to cityscapes, towns and villages.

Please also remember to include caption/description of your image in your email entry so we can judge your image accurately. Without the words explaining what your picture depicts, our juries have to guess- and they may guess wrong! Amateur photographer, we’re looking for the very best of buzz and flutter photos. Go though London and take your chance to capture images celebrating bees and butterflies and birds.

The photographic competition winning shots will be seen by thousands when displayed on the Chelsea Fringe website and on our Facebook page.

Organised by the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Prize has established a reputation for its diversity of photographic styles submitted by a range of photographers, from gifted amateurs and photography students to established professionals.

In the Prize’s search for excellence, photographers are encouraged to interpret ‘portrait’ in its widest sense of ‘photography concerned with portraying people with an emphasis on their identity as individuals.’

The prize winners and exhibition selection is judged, on an equal and anonymous basis, from original prints. In 2011 the exhibition featured sixty selected works and was seen by over 75,000 people at the National Portrait Gallery. The 2012 Prize exhibition will run at the National Portrait Gallery,London, from 8 November 2012 to 17 February 2013.

Images submitted should be innovative and creative, and be inspired by one of the following categories:

Here’s the deal. The winner of this once-in-a-lifetime competition will be invited to shoot the image for our cover with the Fujifilm X-Pro1, a fantastic new compact system camera, which we review this issue on page 112. To make sure you get the most out of this opportunity, you’ll be shooting our cover alongside Brett Harkness, a top portrait and social photographer. The winner also gets to keep the X-Pro1 with 35mm lens!

Brett will offer help and guidance on the day, alongside Geoff Harris, editor of Digital Camera, and Nathan Wake, a Fujifilm pro photographer and technical expert. The second and third-prize winners will receive a Fujifilm X-S1 and X10 camera respectively.

We’ll confirm the exact date of the one-day cover shoot with the winner, but it will need to take place around the second week of June 2012 to fit in with the magazine’s deadlines (please check your availability at that time).

So what do you have to do to win? The theme of the competition is outdoor portraits, so we’re looking for really good shots of people taken outside. There are no restrictions on the type of people you include in your entries (individuals or groups, age, gender, nationality etc) or type of outdoor location. We’re simply looking for really outstanding and creative examples of outdoor portrait photography.

Our judging panel will pick one overall winner and two runners-up. We will also provide accommodation for the winner (one night before the photo shoot) and cover travel expenses.

This competition is restricted to UK residents for logistical reasons (although you are welcome to submit images taken anywhere in the world).

Taryn Goodge

Harrington College of Design, Chicago, “Boating and Bumming” This idyllic beach scene was shot in the urban, midwestern climes of downtown Chicago. “The photograph was taken atop the John Hancock Center,” says Taryn Goodge, age 18, who grew up in rural Michigan before moving to the Windy City to attend Harrington College of Design, where she’s a freshman. “My plans as a photographer are changing all the time,” she says. “Two months ago, I would have told you that I want to work in the police department as a forensic photographer. However, now I am getting much more interested in product and tabletop photography, so I’m considering looking further into that as a career choice. I shoot freelance portraits, and I’m working on a street photography project.”

These could include pictures from the local park, where people play with their kids or walk their dogs, or favourite strolls in the countryside.

What is important is that the images capture what these places mean to you, the photographers, and why they matter.

Contest Theme: “Funniest Candids”

Pictures can be your own interpretation of the Olympics; so whether it’s you and your mates messing about in the park or an artistic take on the Olympic rings we want to see it!

If your audience is standing indefinitely motionless, entranced by the possibilities in your work and in devising an infinitude of scenarios and alternate endings, then you’ve made an image whose suggestive ambiguity inspires the kind of daydreaming of champions we’re after.

Photographers have created images that baffle the viewer as early at the 1860s. Henry Peach Robinson being a pioneer of the photo montage long before there was photoshop. However you create images that lead the imagination to the the edge, leaving us needing only to leap, we want to see them. Multi exposures, constructions, staged, anything goes, as long as it leaves your audience guessing.

Opening in Chicago in 1987, the Catherine Edelman Gallery was quick to become one of the Midwest’s leading fine art photography galleries. Director and Owner Catherine Edelman has “a patient eye for artists, tracking their progress [and] representing mature photographers who deliver consistent, quality work, regardless of age or exposure.” Edelman has upheld her original promise to feature prominent Contemporary photographers alongside new and emerging talent, supplying her audience with a refreshing breadth of both subject matter and photographic technique.

CEG debuted with Nan Goldin and the “Ballad of Sexual Dependency” progressing through everything from street photography (Susan Meiselas, Sebastiao Salgado, James Nachtwey) to fashion photography (Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, Matthew Rolston) to traditional landscape images (Michael Kenna, Lynn Geesaman) and also socially-conscious work (Richard Misrach, Jeffrey Wolin, Terry Evans, Allen Ginsberg) and narrative (Joel-Peter Witkin, Elizabeth Ernst, Dan Estabrook).

Working closely with magazine editors and book publishers, the Catherine Edelman Gallery co-published several monographs and collections, including: Written in Memory: Portraits of the Holocaust, photographs by Jeffrey Wolin (Chronicle Books), Pressure, photographs by Joe Ziolkowski (Pohlmann Press), What Were You Thinking (celebrating the 15 year anniversary of the gallery in association with Paper Mirror Press) and Iron Beauties, a monograph on the work of Chicago photographer Michelle Keim, published by Nazraeli Press.

Catherine Edelman is an executive board member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers and President of the Chicago Art Dealers Association. In addition to hosting Saturday Morning educational seminars for her community, Edelman recently opened an online gallery of underrepresented local artists, titled “The Chicago Project.”

Fine Art: High-quality images that have been created by an individual to fulfil their creative vision. They could be part of a set or a project or alternatively three separate images.

Nature/Landscape: Photographs that capture the beauty of the natural world in all its forms, from stunning landscapes through to perfectly executed images of flora and fauna.

Wedding/Social: This category is open to photographers capturing outstanding images of any aspect of a wedding in styles that range from the traditional through to the more individual approach.

Portrait: A wide-open category that covers any photography of the human form, ranging from full-length studies through to head and shoulders and close-ups, with the emphasis on creativity.

Product: Here the definition of product is as far ranging as the photographer wants to make it, with subjects ranging from cars through to food or packaging being equally eligible, while the brief could be a commercial one or self set.

Architecture: With every type of building from the grand through to the humble being open to photographers, we’re looking for an imaginative interpretation of the architectural theme.

General: This is the category that gives you full rein to enter cherished images that don’t necessarily fit neatly into any of the other categories that have been listed here.

Wildlife: A wide open category that covers all forms of wildlife, from the huge through to the tiny. Our only stipulation is that images depict living creatures and any entries showing stuffed or dead animals will be automatically excluded.

Project//21: Project//21 is a general photographic category open to all amateur photographers, students, assistants and young professionals 21 years old and under.

Underwater: As the category title suggests, the theme here is Images that have been taken underwater, and the photographer could have used any camera system above 16MP plus a professional camera housing to get the shots

The Urban Gallery is in the heart of Stratford, home of the Olympic village and stadium for the 2012 London games.Enter our juried competition which focuses on all things London, past to present: Think modern, street, traditional and or Olympic.
