Epic panoramic, pinhole and photogram, photo-transfers, 3D photographic sculpture or objects, installation, high speed, time-lapse and frozen-in-time images, as well as infrared and HDR photography, are just some of the means photographers may use to create dynamic works using the photographic medium.

Analog and digital photographs are both eligible and may be used with any other medium.  Note: the gallery has a 22ft. extended ceiling with mounts that may be accessed for installation. Digital enhancement should be noted in the Process Notes section of the on-line application, and photographic images must be artist’s original work. Fine art photography images should emphasize unique composition, pattern, shape, and color/contrast. Framed photographs may not exceed 48″ width and 60″ height.

Hanging Around – Photo and caption by Peter Stanley/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest – A two year old Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) of the Sabinyo family, plays in the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. In 1981, this population fell to 240 because of rampent poaching and habitat loss. Today the population is estimated to be around 800 and rising and this photograph represents the exciting turn around and hope for the next generation. Thank you to the conservationists, rangers and educators working to protect these magnificent cousins of ours and their habitat in the Virunga massif.

At its second edition the award was created, with the confidence to assert itself as a permanent appointment within the international photo festival Cortona On The Move – photography in travel.

The main theme is Happiness On The Move. Its interpretation is left free to the vision, creativity and sensitivity of the authors who are called to reflect on the theme, moving away from its purely literal meaning and to develop it in its various aspects.

Special attention is given to the theme of movement as a real or figurative journey and to the happiness that follows:

The purpose of the International Award ONTHEMOVE is to tell visually all the manifestations of joy and celebration of life. Participants are invited to submit works that develop in an original way the general theme of the competition. The jury is exclusively online and is made up of professionals and experts.

We invite all shark photographers to enter their images below. This year’s categories are:

Shark! – The White Shark has become infamous, and even has its own theme tune. However there are over 500 species of shark found worldwide, let’s celebrate them all!

Shark Personality – Sharks are known as formidable predators but they can also be playful, lazy, calm, shy and inquisitive…how do you see them?

Best of British – British waters are home to over 50 species of shark, skate and ray, including some of the fastest and rarest in the world – here’s your chance to help us showcase them.

Skates & Rays – These flat, cartilaginous fish are closely related to sharks, and with over 600 species worldwide, there are more than enough to choose from!

Human Encounters – This category provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between humans and sharks, whether positive or negative.

The Judgment Criteria are: (1) Exposure – Image is properly exposed and all pertinent details are visible, (2) Focus – Images must be in focus, focal point should be placed on the subject, effective use of shallow depth of field, artistic quality of the out of focus areas of the image. (3) Framing and Cropping – Images should be well cropped (i.e.: aspect ratio, rule of thirds & the golden spiral), (4) Composition – Symmetry, asymmetry, and effectively use the foreground and background and (5) Artistry – Images must contain natural wildlife and will be judged on overall creativity.

Pets will NOT be judged. ‘Photoshopped’ images will NOT be allowed.

Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. And numerous Editor’s Selections will be exhibited in several Photo Review web galleries.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country.

An entry fee of $35 for up to three prints or images and $8 for each additional image entitles all entrants to a copy of the full-color catalogue. In addition, all entrants will be able to subscribe to The Photo Review for $36, a 20% discount.

We are looking for a series of 3-10 images on any theme and in any style, for example documentary, fine art, travel etc.

Millennium Images is best known for their book covers with some of the top selling publishers in the UK and abroad.

The photos will be shortlisted by WIN staff and a selected jury. The twenty top photos will be exhibited in Stockholm during the World Water Week 2013 where the visitors will be able to vote for the photos. It will also be possible to vote online through various WIN and TI online channels.

Cairns Underwater Film Festival is a celebration of underwater photography and filmmaking. The festival combines an underwater film and photo competition (which focuses on the rich and diverse beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea) with a film festival showcasing underwater imagery from around the world.

The Categories

The competition has been expanded in 2013 to feature two extra categories:

Garden View: A landscape taken in any of the four Gardens. Note: images should not feature any identifiable people.

Plant Portrait: A plant (tree, shrub or flower) either singly or in a group of the same plant, or a close-up, taken in any of the four Gardens.

Abstract: An experimental or expressionistic photograph (could be of a plant, an animal or a view of one of the Gardens.

Wildlife in the Garden: Animals, insects or birds taken in any of the four Gardens.

Young Photographer: Photographers under the age of 17 can enter their pictures into this category.

Photos must be the original work of the entrant and taken at one of the four Gardens of RBGE within the last year. Care must be taken not to damage plants or RBGE property in taking the photos. We would ask that tripods are not used in the rock garden.

Yesterday, World Press Photo “to curtail further speculation” following Krawetz’s analysis of Hansen’s photo, took the decision to involve two independent experts to carry out a forensic investigation of the image file with full co-operation from Hansen. The results of which can be read below.

 
“We have reviewed the RAW image, as supplied by World Press Photo, and the resulting published JPEG image. It is clear that the published photo was retouched with respect to both global and local color and tone. Beyond this, however, we find no evidence of significant photo manipulation or compositing. Furthermore, the analysis purporting photo manipulation is deeply flawed, as described briefly below.”

 
1. XMP Analysis. The XMP analysis reflects an incomplete understanding of the Photoshop metadata and also paraphrases the contents in a misleading way. The referenced block of metadata merely indicates that the file was adjusted in the Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw module on multiple occasions before it was opened in Photoshop and then saved out as a JPEG. In fact, this metadata does not track whether multiple files were composited.

 
2. Error Level Analysis. The forensic analysis of the JPEG compression as performed by error level analysis (ELA) does not provide a quantitative or reliable analysis of photo manipulation. This analysis frequently mis-identifies authentic photos as altered and fails to identify altered images, and as such is not a reliable forensic tool.

 
3. Shadow Analysis. The shadow analysis is flawed in its logic and conclusions. It is true that linear constraints that connect points on an object with their corresponding points on the shadow should intersect at a single point (assuming the presence of a single light source). The location of this intersection point, however, cannot be used to reason about the elevation of the light in the scene. The intersection point is simply the projection of the light source into the image plane. This projected location can be anywhere in the image (including below the ground plane) depending on where the photographer is oriented relative to the sun.

“When I compare the RAW file with the prizewinning version I can indeed see that there has been a fair amount of post-production, in the sense that some areas have been made lighter and others darker. But regarding the positions of each pixel, all of them are exactly in the same place in the JPEG (the prizewinning image) as they are in the RAW file. I would therefore rule out any question of a composite image.”

Color has a tremendous influence on human emotions. As Picasso once said, colors, like features, follow the changes of emotions. Although, and while perception of color is somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have a universal influence on people. These scientific principles of color are known as chromotherapy and have been used as a form of alternative medicine since Egyptian civilization.

Whether it is used as a conceptual trigger of a project or introduced in the middle of a process to reconfigure the perception of some material or space, the truth is that color has its particular psychological function, either perceptive or systematic.

We are expecting to receive images of spaces where we can observe and feel this dual ability of colors, in both rational and emotional outcomes.

Judging criteria:

Composition (20%), technical execution (20%) and narrative (60%).

World Press Photo has responded to the controversy surrounding the winner of their 2012 award by calling in two independent experts to carry out a “forensic investigation of the image file”. Gaza Burial is the title of the photograph taken by Swedish photographer Paul Hansen for the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. It depicts the bodies of two small children being carried by their uncles to a mosque for their funeral in Gaza City. The children died when their house was hit by an Israeli air strike in November. Their father was also killed, and their mother and four other siblings were seriously wounded. The scene in an alleyway was described by jury chair Santiago Lyon as a powerful image. “The combination of the small size of the children’s bodies combined with the variety of expressions – of pain, rage and sadness…make for an incredible collection of powerful motifs and imagery,” he said.

 
However, photography sites have been abuzz with speculation over the amount of enhancement Hansen may have used on the image. The photograph has a painting-like quality particularly in the way the faces of the main protagonists are lit. It prompted computer scientist Neal Krawetz to carry out a detailed analysis of the metadata involved in the taking of the photo to answer suspicions that the picture had in some way been faked. He concluded that the lighting may have been significantly enhanced since the highlights of the mourners’ faces do not match the position of the sun which he believes would have cast a dark shadow over them. Hansen doesn’t deny some enhancement in this aspect. He told us that “In the post-process toning and balancing of the uneven light in the alleyway – I developed the raw file with different density to use the natural light instead of dodging and burning. In effect to recreate what the eye sees and get a larger dynamic range.” He believes this is an acceptable practice that falls within the World Press Photo’s guidelines. Judging from comments on various forums, photographers are split on this interpretation.

 
The rules for the World Press Photo Award state, “the content of the image must not be altered. Only retouching, which conforms to currently accepted standards in the industry, is allowed. The jury is the ultimate arbiter of these standards and may at its discretion request the original, unretouched file as recorded by the camera or an untoned scan of the negative or slide”. The submission of the raw file, which contrary to some reports is not a precondition for entry into the competition, World Press Photo now appears to be demanding.

 
This action may be because Neal Krawetz has gone much further by suggesting that Hansen used three separate conversions of the photo, making it a composite. If true, this would make it invalid under the World Press Photo rules. Hansen denies this charge, has stated that four experts from other juries have examined his photograph and that he is co-operating fully with the World Press Photo over its decision to examine it “to curtail further speculation”. World Press Photo have not given a timescale, merely saying that the results of their investigation will be announced as soon as they become available.

The main categories of the competition have a deadline of October 31st.

1st Place – First Light at Sherwood by Dianna Jazwinski – Image of morning light breaking through the mist at Sherwood Garden in Devon.I liked how the shaft of sunlight and the juxtaposition of the trees framed the Magnolia tree in the distance which seemed to glow, in tandem with the light. I am also drawn to the sculptural quality of bare trees which are always beautifully enhanced by mist.

2nd Place – Fritillary by Edward Jones – I was attracted by the shape of the flower against the morning sunlight coming through a window.

3rd Place – Time Out by Gösta Lindbom.

Photographers from all over the world are invited to enter the annual International Garden Photographer of the Year competition, now in its sixth year.

International Garden Photographer of the Year is the world’s premier competition for garden, plant and environmental photography, organised in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

As well as the three photo projects, there are eight categories:

Food provides the foundation to life. Not only can we not live without food, but the wrong diet can have serious health consequences. Biology research and field work play a vital role in understanding how all organisms on the planet receive the energy they need to keep on living.

We are seeking original photographs that encapsulate the topic ‘Feeding Life’. Your photograph could address a challenging issue like food security and waste, or malnutrition, obesity, and other diet-linked diseases. It could provide insight into the feeding behaviour of a plant or animal species including predators and parasites. Robin Rice in NY, Paul Cava in Philadelphia, Rule Gallery in Denver. As a photographer of fine art he worked with and documented noted artists lives and their work such as Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat and Rene Ricard.

His curatorial photography projects are numerous. Critical acclaim with the Museum Of Contemporary Art/Denver photography exhibitions should be noted where Mark was a co-founder and director from 1999-2000. Mark recently is a private art consultant in Denver, independently curating showing a wide range of emerging artist’s with internationally known names. Recent shows at Gallery Sink are Emotional Distance (landscape), Human Form and Social Landscapes(social documentary). Photography exhibits culled from and created on the Internet has been a fifteen-year passion with Mark. He achieved successful results with web sites such as (TheSight.com) and by assembling traveling exhibitions from the net such as “Off The Highway”.

Mark’s family heritage in photography runs deep. Sink’s on-going research is on his great grand father photographer James L. Breese, who was the founder, member and primary inspiration for the Camera Club of NY one of the earliest grouping of fine art photographers in America. And further back Samuel Finley Breese Morse, (Breese’s uncle), was “the father of American photography” and inventor of the telegraph. With this legacy in mind Sink, has formed a monthly Salon of artists both on the Internet and in his living room.

Kristen Hatgi was born in Denver Colorado on the 24th of December 1984. At the age of twelve she borrowed her dad’s camera to create staged situations in her room. At sixteen she took a photography class at her high school and was thereafter committed to the medium.

Her love for art and photography carried her to Boston where she spent five years studying at the Art Institute of Boston. Kristen graduated with a bachelor in Fine Arts in May of 2008.

Kristen lives in Denver where she collaborates with her Husband Mark Sink creating wet plate collodion photographs. She also works as a commercial photographer, and designer. She has exhibited her photography in NYC, Boston, DC, and Denver. Kristen spends most of her time thinking about or making photography.

We offer free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibition, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs.

The announcement by Adobe that the latest versions of its Photoshop software will be available through subscription only and not to buy has brought a mixed reaction from users of the software. Adobe’s move comes after individual programs such as Photoshop were bundled together with 15 other programs including Dreamweaver, In-Design, Illustrator and Premiere, into Creative Suite (CS). Adobe believes that just as customers accepted this bundle, they will now accept the new subscriber model known as Creative Cloud (CC), the brand that it uses for web apps. This means that the software can be used on a variety of platforms. “I-tunes for designers? No thanks”, screamed one angry user on the Adobe Community forum. “For sure, as long as your income can cover it then it’s a no-brainer”, says another.

Adobe will continue to sell current versions of Adobe CS6 but, while it will still provide security patches and bug fixes, it will not provide updates. In the UK, access to all programs in the Creative Cloud will cost £47 a month provided customers agree to take out an annual subscription. Those opting to pay on a month-to-month basis will pay £70. Access to individual apps will total £18 a month if customers sign up for a year. These prices are higher than those offered to American subscribers who will pay $49.99 a month for the full suite. All subscribers will also receive access to an online storage system and project management tools and discounts will be available for CS6 owners who sign up before 31 July.

Adobe says switching to a subscription system means product updates can now be introduced continuously in order to provide the latest web standards and technologies. Purchased programs (known in the industry as perpetual licensing) mean that new features and updates can only be produced on a certain cycle every 18-24 months. A subscription system will make the company’s revenue streams more predictable and will also reduce the risk of their products being pirated. The move is the culmination of a year-long pilot programme to establish whether a subscription service would work. The company claims it has 500,000 subscribers for Creative Cloud and is a vindication of its decision. Against that, many complain that Adobe is deciding what is good for the customer rather than asking customers what they need.
 

“Often photographers won’t upgrade software unless they see a business case for the extra features offered in the newest version,” says Jonathan Briggs of the British Institute of Professional Photographers. “But with the new monthly subscription package, their ongoing personal business choice is taken out of the equation.”

Certainly Adobe’s move to subscription will concentrate the minds of photographers and photographic companies into determining what Adobe tools they need and how much they will have to pay for them.

The Sausalito Art Festival has announced the second annual American Icon Art Competition and the call is out for painters and photographers of all skill levels to submit their works, compete for prize money and earn a place in the innovative, juried digital exhibition as part of the 2013 Festival August 31-September 2, 2013.

Entries are now accepted for the American Icon Art Competition online at www.americanicon.net The exhibition will be presented in the Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model building on the Festival site in HD video with a special sound score, making the process and show as green as possible.

About the Exhibition and Competition Inaugurated as part of the 2012 60th anniversary Sausalito Art Festival, The American Icon Competition and Exhibition celebrated the Golden Gate Bridge’s 75th anniversary. The event was conceived as a way to welcome artists of all skill levels to compete and exhibit at the Festival. The competition is intended to inspire celebration of the theme and artistic, creative expression. 30,000 art enthusiasts will flock to the waterfront village of Sausalito, CA to celebrate and interact with 270 award-winning artists from the Bay Area the country and the world exhibiting and selling their works of art. It will all take place over Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 2, 2013.
